Many an artist has been caught up in the vortex of fame and new-found attention and its accompanying lure of drugs, easy women / men, and riotous living. Joey Scarbury decided after being on the road, singing with Loretta Lynn for two years, that he would not be one of them. Coming off one of the greatest signature pop songs of all time, Theme From Greatest American Hero – Believe It Or Not, I’m Walking On Air, and under contract with one of the most influential television music men ever (Mike Post), Joey took the less traveled road, replacing fame with family, and eschewing drugs, for duties of a father and husband. He’d rather be a Little League baseball coach with his kids, than a Big League name-in-lights performer.
As a tribute to Joey I re-wrote the lyrics to his famous song. It is not on this album, in fact it hasn’t been recorded yet and would need Mike Post’s and Stephen Geyer’s permission to do so. And then we’d have to talk Joey into singing it. Miracles do happen, however.
The Joey Scarbury Song, I call it
(sung to the tune of Greatest American Hero – Believe It Or Not I’m Walking On Air).
Guess you wonder what happened to me
I can’t believe it myself
Did I have the world on a string long ago?
Or just dream it like everyone else?
My kids are the light of a new day
Hit me right out of the blue
Breaking the spell of the years gone by
I’m better than anyone knew
chorus
Believe . . .
. . .
I fly on the wings of a three-year-old’s prayer
And she loves the one who lets her bounce on his knee
Believe it or not, that’s me
verse
We built a life in the country
“Just Me” is no way to live
Happiness is one treasure you’ll never find
‘Cause happiness is something you give
chorus
And believe . . .
. . .
I fly like a bird when my kids are all there
Though I love to sing
You can keep your brass ring
‘Cause when I look in their eyes I see
Who’s loved by Cody and Caitlin and Jeremy?
Believe it or not, it’s me.
There are several artists on this album who’ve chosen family over fame. That’s why you haven’t heard of them.
Circa 2035 – Seven songs from those three volumes are on this Desperate album.
